Eugene Von Blaas, also known as Eugene de Blaas specialised in genre paintings. These often featured beautiful young women or as in this instance, the single image of an Italian beauty. He was born in Albano, near Rome to Austrian parents. He studied under his father, Karl Von Blaas at the Rome Accademia and later at the Venice Accademia, where he later became a professor. He exhibited in Italy and in London at the Royal Academy (1875-91) and elsewhere. His work can be found in the museums of Leicester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Vienna, Melbourne and Sydney.
