Born in Besser, Island of Samsö, Sorensen was to become olle of the finest Danish marine painters. In 1846 he was commissioned to visit the Mediterranean in a Danish frigate to sketch the landfalls. He studied at the Copenhagen Academy where he later exhibited. He also showed work at the Stockholm Academy. Examples of his work can be found in many major museums including the Royal Naval Museum, Copenhagen; Frederiksborg Museum, Zealand; the Maritime Museum, Kronborg Castle; the National Gallery of Oslo and the National Museums of Stockholm and Copenhagen.
